Athletic
and Entertainment Visas
The
O Category:
This
category (O-1) is set aside for foreigners with "extraordinary"
abilities in the sciences, arts, education, business, entertainment
industry or athletics. The U.S. Government permits people with
O visas to bring family members or dependents necessary. To qualify
for O visa status, the applicant must demonstrate and give proof
of sustained national or international acclaim and recognition
for achievements in his or her field of expertise. The length
of time varies for a foreigner's stay under an O visa. A visit
to the U.S. with an O visa depends on the amount of time a person
needs to complete an event, performance, scientific project, conference,
convention, lecture series, tour, exhibit, business project, academic
year, sports season or engagement.
The
P Category:
The
P visa category covers those entertainers and athletes who cannot
qualify under the extraordinary ability standard for the O visa
category. This visa is for foreign athletes, individuals and members
of teams, who participate at an "internationally competitive"
level. The P visa category includes entertainers who have achieved
international acknowledgment for a "sustained and substantial
period of time." This category is very specific in deciding
who qualifies for a P visa. The P visa category is divided into
three different categories, each category allowing foreign visitors
to stay in the U.S. for a different amount of time.
